Procedure for Allegations of Abuse against a Childminder

As a childminder, working alone I am more vulnerable to allegations of abuse being made against my family or me. I will take precautions to protect myself from this happening by:

  • ensuring all household members over 16 are DBS checked and cleared
  • ensuring all visitors to the house sign the visitors book and do not have unsupervised access to the children under any circumstances
  • asking any regular visitors to my setting to complete an EY2 form and undertake a DBS check
  • not leaving a minded child in a room alone with a visitor, unless I know they have been DBS cleared, for example another Ofsted Registered childminder
  • not allowing any visitors to take my minded children to the toilet or change their nappies
  • requesting identification from all visitors not known to me and refusing entry if I am unsure of them
  • arranging for any maintenance work to my property to be carried out at weekends and during non-minding hours (where possible)
  • maintaining a visitors’ book which is available for you to look at
  • documenting every accident and incident that occurs whilst in my care, informing parents and requesting them to sign my records
  • noting any marks on the children when they arrive and asking parents to inform me of any accidents that have occurred whilst outside my care
  • ensuring the children are supervised at all times
  • keeping accurate records on each child and writing a daily diary

If an allegation is made against me, or any member of my family, or other adults or children in my home who have had contact with minded children, I will record it and will report it to the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) and Ofsted within 24 hours following the Southend Safeguarding Partnership procedures. I will follow this phone call up with a letter/email to the MASH+ Team the same day. Appropriate support will be available for any person who is the subject of allegations whilst the procedure is being investigated.

I will gain support and professional advice from the following organisations:

  • My insurance company
  • PACEY Legal Advice Line
  • Ofsted
  • Local Early Childhood Services

I will write a detailed record of all related incidents, including what was said and by whom, with times and dates.

I will ask any witnesses (if there were any) to also write a statement detailing the incident they witnessed and giving their contact details in case it needs to be followed up by the authorities.

My childminding services would be suspended whilst social services investigated the allegations of abuse.

It is not my responsibility to attempt to investigate the situation myself.
